Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we are asked most often about RetroHouse.

How do I listen to sets in the car?

The In the car page plays a DJ's or a club's sets one after another, so you never touch your phone while driving.

Before you leave

  1. On your phone, open retrohouse.net/oncar (or the « In the car » link in the menu).
  2. Pick DJ or Club and type a name.
  3. All their sets are ticked: untick the ones you don't want. « + Add a DJ or a club » mixes several lists.
  4. Choose the order: Best quality first, Chronological or Shuffled. « Good quality only » keeps sets at 128 kbps and above.
  5. Tap Play all or Play selection.

On the road

  • Connect the phone to the car by Bluetooth or cable: the sound comes through the car speakers.
  • The next / previous buttons on the steering wheel skip between sets. The set name and cover show on the car's screen.
  • You can lock the phone: the music keeps playing.
  • Sets stream over your mobile data: about 60 MB per hour at 128 kbps, 145 MB at 320 kbps.

Pick up later

On your next drive, tap Resume my last drive: playback starts again where it stopped.

Install it as an app

  • Android: tap « Add to home screen » on the page, or the browser's ⋮ menu → « Add to Home screen ». The RH Voiture cassette icon appears.
  • iPhone (Safari): tap Share, then « Add to Home Screen » and « Add ».
  • On a computer, the page shows a QR code to scan with your phone.

Set up your list before you start the engine, and keep your eyes on the road.

Is listening free?

Yes. RetroHouse is a non-commercial project. Everything can be streamed for free, without signing up.

Can I download the sets?

Yes, that is exactly what they are here for. Every set can be downloaded freely to listen to at home, in the car or anywhere else.

Just mention RetroHouse if you share it.

Can I listen to RetroHouse on the radio?

Yes, on Radio XBeat: Monday to Friday, 6 to 8 am and 6 to 7 pm. The sets come from the RetroHouse archive.

I recognised a DJ or a date on a set.

Great! Write to us with the title of the set and what you know. We update the page after checking.

I have cassettes, flyers or photos from back then.

They belong here! Cassettes, flyers, photos, membership cards, press cuttings: use Submit an entry at the bottom of every page, or write to us.

You have cassettes but no player any more? Get in touch anyway. We will work out together how to digitise them, and you will get them back.

Every document is checked before it is published, and its author is credited.

I would like a photo or a recording removed.

Write to us and we will remove it quickly.

If you made a recording or a photo and would like it removed or credited differently, we will do it, no questions asked.

Why do some sets sound worse than others?

Most sets come from cassettes recorded in the clubs, straight off the mixing desk, then copied from hand to hand. Some are thirty years old and have been played a lot.

They are digitised and cleaned up, but we cannot bring back what was never recorded. When there are several copies of the same party, we keep the best one.

On the In the car page, « Good quality only » keeps only sets at 128 kbps and above.
