For several decades, Belgium was one of the most important centres of club culture in Europe. From the 1970s through the golden era of the 1980s and 1990s, Belgian nightclubs developed a distinctive identity that had a lasting influence on electronic music and nightlife culture.
From New Beat to House, through Techno, Trance and the various underground movements, Belgian clubs welcomed generations of DJs and music enthusiasts. Venues such as Boccaccio, At The Villa, La Bush, L’H2O, Le Mirano and Fuse became iconic names, each representing a particular era and a different facet of this history.
This culture was not limited to the major cities. Across the country, hundreds of nightclubs and clubs brought the nights to life and contributed to the creation of a genuine network of venues, DJs, producers and record labels. Archives from this period demonstrate, in particular, the importance of clubs in the emergence of the Belgian sound and its international influence.
